cedaa’s been on a roll, between his new e.p. and his recent remixes. while the young producer certainly likes his juke, his newer material sounds like an expansion / exploration of different terrains. the two below tracks sound like he went straight to the jungle, and we like what’s going on there. cedaa sounds fresher than ever, showing him not only meeting his influences but helping to push them further.
cedaa – palomino
dave quam is one of the most authoritative music professors/archaeologists we know, and i’ve spent plenty a late night treasure hunting through the annals of his blog, studying up on micro-genres of dance music and that chicago house/juke sound we fetishize, and consuming his mix series. which makes me kinda sad that he’s planning on purging the older tracks soon (so get to digging), but thankfully, he’s produced this bizarre, sometimes unsettling comp of 16 oddities from around the world — in his words “more of a weirdest of than a best of” — and well, you know we’re up for that. hear some select tracks and nab the full mix below, and look out for releases from his new label with azizaman and ghettotekz, lit city.

british beat alchemist chris owen (ornine) creates some sublimely raw, mutant juke that has swirled our brains around since discovering him recently. intrigued to hear what’s behind these strange creations, ornine melded this for us, his first mix.
in his words:
“as for notes, these notes from a talk by Bruce Sterling on the state of the future have been on my mind, tried to capture this flux between clouds of ungrounded trance and flashes of mania, and how that reflects increasing social instability and evaporating ideology… built between the dancefloor and the net. ”

on “re: winter wonder land,” florida’s sea things reacts to the animal collective song in a track that samples a good chunk of, but does not purport to “remixing,” its source material.
he says, “I think of it more like a “reply” to that song than a remix of it (the logic is of sampling and adding, not revising … itll make sense when u here it, done with full love for those fellas). Like an extension, over time, of having loved the song for so long … it came out of remembering listening to “Winter Wonder Land” really.”
memory — what a fascinating thing.

not to call white mountains derivative of the the field, one of my favorite projects ever, but we’re pleased to find another artists with that fine-tuned sense of texture, samples/loops, and heart. white mountains music is flush with sonic warmth, as exemplified in the luminous “spectra,” off his forthcoming lightforms ep on waaga records. the piece took hold of me from the onset and drew me deeper with each listen. but really, been enjoying everything i’ve been hearing on the soundcloud and bandcamp, the remixes are great as well; new one for choongum enclosed below.
rare early chicago dance mania track that may be impossible to find online apart from the anonymous online mix attached below. somehow landed on this in the middle of the night and was immediately lifted by the perfectly nuanced drum track supporting the hauntingly beautiful whitney houston vocal, given some strangely ethereal quality in this context. even the bootleg quality of this rip can’t stop us from jamming this at our next party. feeling it.
dj skip – don’t be afraid (rip)
been on a serious dance mania kick lately, will post a playlist soon, til then you can hear the full mix:
matt fishbeck’s holy shit project has included ariel pink and christopher owens of girls in its roster, and 2006′s ariel pink-featuring stranded at two harbors is a shambolic, pink-fi folk pop record with peaks as high as his collaborators’ best. the songs have stuck with me.
fishbeck has reportedly been in isolation for the past few years as his former bandmates earned the ears of the world, but is now re-emerging solo with new live dates and a new record. i have heard murmurs about the new material being stunning, but definitely inhale these gems in the interim (seek out the record if you can), and catch weird magic with the live return of holy shit (alongside john maus, gary war and international tapes) this monday at glasslands.
so last night in the middle of cosmic bombshell gillian‘s birthday party, this happened:
(this was preceded by an explanation that the big bang was in the key of b flat.)
at the end of the recording you can hear boots say “that was like the chechen zikr,” which is an old field recording i found years ago online, and possibly the most intense recording i’ve ever heard. the chechens are a notorious/cut-throat bunch, but their chants are incredible/trance-inducing:
(if anyone knows the origin of this recording please let me know.)
the men in action:
try to vibe as hard as these guys.
