hollagramz make exquisitely crafted electronic music and almost nobody knows about them [yet]. the denver pair throw the real is a feeling party alongside travis egedy (pictureplane), who is an adequate musical touchstone, while hollagramz still seem comfortable in their cousin dimension. “retrograde” is a choice cut off their free e.p. spectral crush, and afterwards you can turn to “death by turquoise vision” for extended voyaging.

hypnotic, cathartic, sassy as fuck. kevin prodigy describes the beat as “a lil something soft” that he made out of a voicemail his friend left him. the basic elements (vocal triggers, kick drum pulse and explosive blams) coalesce perfectly, and the result isn’t exactly “soft”. after this past week, i will always associate this track with a dark basement full of sweaty contorting bodies. tagged on hypem as “dance, cunt, vogue, ballroom beats, relentlessly cunty.” sounds about right.

met robert from sore eros in my travels to austin last week, and dude has quite the story. the artists he’s recorded with range from panda bear to adam green (at times, together), he served in ariel pink’s first touring band incarnation, and used to live in l.a. and be involved in the damaged art pop scene out there. he gave me a copy of an apparently very rare comp he made but never circulated in 2004, featuring an all-star rotating cast going under various pseudonyms, many of which have come full bloom since.
our favorites are gold digger (ariel pink & gary war)’s “liquid sun,” a damaged recording at some points messy but with a chorus huge enough that i’m reminded of the original “round and round” demo, and kurt vile’s sentimental instrumental “black hand squeezing,” which shows a synthesized version of kurt i haven’t seen before:

tyler and zak of greatest hits (along w/ sam of outer limits recordings et al.) stopped by our radio show last week, in high spirits and with plenty of material in tow. specifically: their entire new freak funk boy 7″, new raw thrills jam “whole lotta lovin”, a brand new sweethearts tune performed by the happy healthy boys (sweethearts (zak + sam)+tyler), live fave “L train girl”, harry nilsson and sparks covers, and more. the recording came straight from their mixer, “demented and filled with sentiment.”
this recording offers a first listen of a bunch of new material, and stands as a snapshot of an incredibly prolific and wacky corner of the musical landscape at their most comfortable and impassioned. many thanks to them for delivering such a packed, well-planned set.
