in this conceptual post we highlight a selection of tracks that utilize the art of sampling in original and exciting ways.
psyched to see this sample done justice, with the lush intro to “sweet jane” beautifully revealing itself in different hues throughout the song. samurai buck are amazing at their brand of “psychedelic hip hop” and we’ll be bringing you more from them soon (in the meantime, download direct from soundcloud for $free).
we tweeted this remix last week and saw the track receive the modern stamp of approval (via band retweet), causing a small resurgence of interest in this juke-ification. verdict: dope. probably more of a todd rundgren cut-up with his “izzat love” laying the foundation, but really great foot-reworking regardless.
lushlife spit a pretty inspired performance on this track, but it’s what’s going on underneath them that interests us here. whomever produced this made great use of the ariel pink sample, chopping it into a brand new melody.
mr. dibiase – Outsider’s Asylum demo ft. jonwayniac
sampled: wendy carlos, “title music from a clockwork orange”
gifted beatsmith mr. dibiase dropped this sinister stomper recently, deftly and darkly employing snippets of walter carlos’ pre-witch house title music for a clockwork orange (d/l above), one of the most unsettling pieces of music we’ve ever heard.
hear the original pow wow chant above, then enter the soundcloud below for your bizarre thrillride. these guys are great at fusing the tribal with the clubby, the results just as intense as the source. (radioclit sampled similar material for the great “get it up” feat. m.i.a., santogold and gorilla zoe, later rubbed by the very best.)
pendu brought “funk / industrial / minimalist” duo //tense// out here from houston, tx to play secret project robot in celebration of a killer first year of pendu disco. happy birthday pendu disco, you’ve been great to us thus far. peep the gallery below.
this altered beast unleashed by german techsmith luke slater last year under the guise l.b. dub corp is a anomaly in his catalogue, a 12-minute tapping of your consciousness, its drone powerful enough to seep into your brain’s main vesicles. on an unlabeled mixtape, this track could come off as totally ambiguous in terms of genre, origin and date. when has ‘minimal techno’ sounded so organic?
c v l t s and umberto have linked up to bring this split that’s been teasing our tastebuds since the news landed in our radar last month. above, scope the artwork (front + back) by megazord. below, check out time wharp‘s remix of c v l t s’ ep jam “angel chromosome” for the very first time. time wharp takes the droney, meditative c v l t s original and sends it through the mincer, soldering the new pieces together until everything is working again. the ep comes out feb 22, purchase gets you an instantaneous digital download + the below remix as a bonus. don’t let the “bonus” status fool you, though, this remix sounds like anything but an afterthought:
cop the split here.
on monday, gang gang dance, light asylum and dj alex lemire pasternak played the capsule trade show in a basement under the former cbgb’s in manhattan. seemed like everyone in the industry was there. cops tried shutting the thing down before gang gang got to play, but thankfully, allowed it to commence. both bands delivered incredible and captivating performances, although the lighting made for a challenging shoot. photos and video below.
more ghettophiles heat: dj manny, a disciple of footwork linchpins dj rashad and dj spinn, has established himself as a “synth & kush addicted maniac,” and both are omnipresent on his new ep harveyworld. “aw shit,” has to be our favorite… hyper-speed dancefloor-ready euphoria with some severely stoned synth mumbles entering in the middle, pure weird. serious watch on this talented young producer.
also take a peek at his insane footworking skills (to a new earl track) below, starting at :40sec. dude has become so impressive at dancing that he was invited to the newly-formed legend clique, which brings together best footworkers of the past decade. scope:

this music video from london’s encounters is so wonderfully creepy, it needs to be shared. clips of some weird films take you on a downright eerie journey through classic scenes of movies i wish i knew. the video couldnt work better with the song, a perfect pair for journeys unknown. encounters keep impressing us with their work, theyre definitely a creative force worth reckoning with.

this super mysterious youtube sensation called dakota has appeared on weird magic once before, and is now creeping back into our speakers after our discovery of the track “we at the mall”. the fuzzy vintage synth loops swirl in the air like clouds of 80′s hairspray permeating the room once this track starts playing. the loops repeating have the audial effect that huffing that hairspray would create. repeating whirls of dancey grains build upon each other until the beat drops and you cant help but lose your shit. mp3s have yet to come out, but we are told an album will be released in the coming months, so seriously keep your eyes peeled for dakota.
from the first time we heard this song its secured a place in our hearts and it’s been cool to watch it develop. check out an early performance of the track in chocolatebobka‘s living room, with a meditative ambient lead-in that melts just as sweetly. plus, the futbol cheering outro actually works perfectly with the music. nice unintentional harmonies, boys. (vid by ray)
finally, we have the panda bear version in our paws, where he takes the original, featuring dent may and woods’ jarvis taveniere on harmonies, and laces it with his own sunrays, elevating the beachy jammer to a tropical state of ecstasy. instant endless-summer territory. the new viber anthem is here. don’t go killin, killin the vibe.
my first music video premiered today on altered zones and rose quartz and it’s for the most promising new electronic musician in brooklyn, magick mountain, with his ep’s title track “one for my ego”. this deep jam fits perfectly next to magick mountain’s highly acclaimed “plains” on the two-track debut, with a full-length soon to come on the pop manifesto.
