madman rashad at his finest. making good use of a simple mj chop until about halfway through when things stop being polite and start getting weird. notes cycle, threatening to burst until they’re spat back out under a rushing fleet of alien synths. hero rashad plays our new years eve party tomorrow, maybe then you can ask him how in the hell he comes up with this shit, or at least peer into his brain.
came across this unknown phenom under the moniker dakota on youtube as of late and was instantly captivated by the sound of lazy future rhythms that had me swaying back and forth with a feirce intensity. set to release their album in the new year, i would suggest you keep your eyes peeled for this outfit of smooth, mysterious bangers.
east london’s hype williams is proving to be quite the frequency blacksmith, appearing on our radar time and time again. after hearing the off kilter, screwed recording of fruit bats forever, i consider him to be the best in his own category. every time i hear this track its almost like i’m on a really confusing acid trip in an old folks home where they are listening to their vintage 45s. off putting at first, but ultimately moving. i see hype williams as groundbreaking the way he can totally fuck your head up, but have you enjoy it.
physical therapy (1/3 of ghe20 gothik) offered up a mix for our new years eve party, and within 24 hours, we were gifted this digitized double-stack. call it early christmas.
evoking that nostalgic feeling of throwback dancefloor euphoria that he so effortlessly conjures and suspending it in the air for a seamless half-hour+, this may be his most accessible mix to date. grafting 90s midwest house with his own personal flavor of futurespeak, this mix easily takes hold of the listener and lifts them to a whole new world of ecstasy. eyes closed and head back, let this be your primer for 2k11.
physical therapy will be joining ariel pink, outer limits recordings, dj rashad, magick mountain, autre ne veut, dr. laser and more at our new years soiree @ 234 starr warehouse. info here. u feeling it yet, dude?
who else would assemble a bill like this but weird magic? three months deep and we’re bringing our dream bill to brooklyn on new years. first weird magic event of this scale… we’ve got a 10k sq ft warehouse, fully secured. intense all-analog sound system. visuals, lazers and a/v installations. we have brought hologram wizard doctor laser out of 20 years of retirement to come out and build a lazer pyramid (check this video out, for real). we are flying ariel pink in from l.a. to grace us with a solo set the likes of which will probably only be witnessed once (we ourselves don’t really know what to expect from him), with sets by outer limits recordings, autre ne veut and steve summers setting the vibe. after ariel we party til there’s no one left, soundtracked by a selection of our favorite audio vibeologists (including footwork’s finest, dj rashad, flying in from chicago). alongside our pals vibes and daily ghost, we welcome you to bring in twenty_eleven with us in the finest way possible. cosmic rebirth.
waking up to find a new short film in your inbox thats scored by vintage panda bear is a sign that times are good, in my book at least. pedro maia sent this really beautiful film to us from portugal the other day and it really struck a chord with us. in this video, pedro has collaborated with noah lennox, “exploring the relation between a musician and filmmaker and their personal reflection on memories”. pretty fitting that the song chosen is titled “a musician and a filmmaker”. the film evokes such a beautiful and downright spooky tunnel into your soul, with super 8 memories that look like they could’ve been yours or a family members, from times that have come and are gone, only for you to keep. when pedro isnt using the imagery of simple things everyone remembers and misses, he uses colors and manipulates the look of film burning to abstract the viewer into a surreal, organic environment which comes off almost like its what a memory thats forgotten would look like. enjoy
weird magic’s current live performances exist somewhere between live performance and dj set, and most of our gigs seem to straddle the line between shows and parties. these lines all blurred together this past weekend, at two weird magic sets and some great shows by ch-rom/human resources/birthdays, st. vincent/julianna barwick, blondes/physical therapy/brenmar, and the so so glos. our set on saturday featured vocals by samandude of the great band friends, and the party went til late in the night, with many a friend joining on vocal duties. at one point the music cut out, but the mic was still on, and sasha of blissed out led a communal acapella/stomp jamout. so many highlights. check the photographic evidance below.
“fatima al qadiri is the streets.” born in senegal, raised in kuwait, fatima al qadiri is now living and working in new york city, deftly summoning her worldly middle-eastern roots in her work. she has popped up on multiple radars of ours — through writing for dismagazine, to being remixed by physical therapy and spun by brenmar, to being named by gatekeeper as one of their favorite contemporary artists. the more we discovered from there, the more intrigued we became, learning about her explorations of goth subculture in kuwait, and her beat-less “symphonic diet raves,” and her acapella project “ayshay,” exploring sunni and shiite acapella jams, quoting and warping the phrases of the qur’an.
her track, “d-medley,” marks an unexpected shift in style, while still keeping all her reference points intact. exotic instrumentation, ethereal wordless aahs, and that “symphonic diet rave” vibe are all present here, each magic layer a shaft of light in this luminous forest. by the time the drums hit somewhere after the two-minute mark, only to disappear again, it almost seems like an afterthought: we’d sooner reach for the physical therapy edit in a party context, but with this tune, your brain’s tastebuds are already tapdancing. bask in this glow:
our pals abracadabra threw quite an enchanted show on friday. st. vincent and julianna barwick both sent our hearts flying with their sets, in perfect harmony with the fogged-out forest atmosphere, leading to a truly beautiful, unique show. flyer and event info @ brcdbr.com.
visual artist andreas fischer / dat dat dat of the visual artist group chop chop from berlin brings otherworldly cg animation from the depths of his mind. its from within this creative abyss he is able to create stunning imagery the likes of which we rarely see. the simplicity of his animated short “palantine” is able to speak volumes with its smooth cgi mountainscapes reflecting off the back of chrome skulls floating as if there were no gravity, creating such a sparse and beautiful netherworld. we discovered this optical mastermind upon watching the animated video he created for egyptrixx. yet another artist putting out captivating material from the label night slugs. Check the vids out below and experience the serene glassy silk landscapes of andreas’ mind.
