electronic body music: reemergence

electronic body music: reemergence

the reemergence of ebm is happening all around us. the hard and sparse danceable electronic beats, clear undistorted vocals, shouts or growls with reverberation and echo effects, and repetitive sequencer lines are beginning to charge out of the club speakers and into the spotlight once again in nyc. electronic body music was named by Ralf hütter of kraftwerk in 1978 to explain the more physical sound of their album “the man-machine”. more recently, bands like gatekeeper, white car, tense, and night gallery are bringing this sound back with a vengance. check the tracks by these artists below and feel the mechanical rumble of new york streets pulsate through your brain.

night gallery – constant struggle
white car – reality beat
tense – the visitor

This is a song by von haze that white car did an edit of, which salem then remixed. heavy track

dunian – mind body mind

dunian – mind body mind

we came across this new magical manifestation called dunian, moniker of arturs liepins from latvia. not much more needs to be said about the man himself, which I’m guessing is the way he wants it to be, just letting his music do the talking. his self titled, self released ep contains only four tracks totaling all of eleven and a half minutes, which only results in using the “repeat all” option when we spin it. these tracks spin webs of shimmering light that really engulf you into some sort of ethereal cocoon.

dunian – mind body mind
dunian – where is the problem
dunian – all intros

his album is free to download here

magic: an elephant painting an elephant

member of our weird magic family, Alon Avissar, recently presented us with these strange pictures from his excursion to thailand capturing an elephant that paints. If an elephant in thailand that can paint isnt enough magic, theres the fact that this elephant paints self portraits. final thought: somewhere in thailand an elephant is refining his skills in the fine arts, what are you doing today?

gatekeeper: serpent + serpent (brenmar remix)

gatekeeper: serpent + serpent (brenmar remix)

since we saw gatekeeper at a very early show opening for salem and witnessed an unsuspecting packed house at glasslands transformed into an otherworldly dark rave cave, they’ve been one of our favorite new bands and sounds.

on their upcoming giza ep, they fit comfortably in their new spacesuits, their dimension fully realized and refined. we’ve hipped you to “chains” via the intense thunderhorse-directed video, now give a listen to possibly our favorite track on the ep, “serpent,” along with new remix from brenmar.

we visited gatekeeper’s bushwick studio before our dj gig with them this past sunday and snapped a few shots of the men at work.

the photos appeared on altered zones in their excellent gatekeeper interview/profile.

jody breeze – the way i move

jody breeze – the way i move

ghettophiles is a chicago label + artist collective tagged as juke/footwork. but beyond labels, when everything falls into place, it surpasses dance music and enters the realm of true, emotive electronic creations.

simple and effective, this sade recontextualization by newcomer jody breeze transports the listener to an elevated earth where there are no walls, just bass. the result strikes many chords: it’s danceable yet hypnotic and soothing, matured modern dance music with intentions to create a world that is beautiful and new and futuristic yet still heavily indebted to the past.

whatever it is, this track is sounding like the pinnacle of music right now.

(do NOT listen on laptop speakers.)

just received this track by curious new project darius and instantly lifted afloat by this 17.5-minute glob of analog synth bliss.

this is the first and only track so far from this project. we will keep you up on more when (if?) it is available.

teams – comfort slave

teams – comfort slave

knoxville’s teams have been on their grind, popping up on our radar with constant blips of ecstasy. walidating the song title completely, I do become a comfort slave.

the synth stabs that begin to echo into the endless abyss evoke a really special euphoria within me. Like a kid at the rollerdisco when he hears the first notes of his jam come on. Only, “comfort slave” tears the roof off the roller rink and the sounds are no longer trapped inside any arena, they’re left to bounce off the stars.

mix: phillip beretta – s4y r34L

exclusive mix from phillip beretta, techno brat in residence of the pop manifesto. Take a peek inside beretta’s mind — and thus, the future — with this mix.

phillip beretta – s4y_r34l.mp3

tracklist:

moon – summer ’06 (phillip’s winter ’10 edit)
apparat – sayulita
isolee – face b
holy other – your love (magick mountain deep cover remix)
traversable wormhole – closed timelike curve (marcel dettmann remix)
ellen allien – flashy flashy (alexi delano remix)
aerea negrot – all i wanna do (efdemin remix)
mirko loko – love harmonic (carl craig’s soundscape remix)
gold panda – snow & taxis (glitterbug’s pink snow ball remix)
fuck buttons – olympians
sonic youth – schizophrenia

phillip’s words:

speaking only for myself: it feels really redundant – reactionary, even – to record a mix and put it on the internet. like that awful guggenheim youtube exhibit, you know – you just cringe at the total cluelessness of superimposing heavy-handed curation on a medium that’s amazing because it’s totally personalized and disrupts archaic (vestigial?) unidirectional content delivery channels.

that’s to say: anyone and everyone can and should be mixing dance records, and all records are dance records, and there’s no reason to treat an mp3 file as a static object when you can be interacting with it, so why am i giving you a pre-mixed file and acting like i’m doing you a favor, right?

whatever, i’m giving myself douchechills “talking about music;” besides, it’s almost 2011 and people still care about pavement, so a dance mix is practically straight out of the motherfucking jetsons, right? here’s one of mine, hope you hate it!
